Chapter 9 Symbols

In Chapter 9 you see a real connection between Wilson and  T. J. Eckleburg.  With Wilson grieving about his wife's  death, T. J. Eckleburg to him is God even though other people just see a huge sign.  He is is the only person who realizes the real symbolism behind the sign.  He believes that it is the eyes of god watching everyone in the towns sin and corruption.

What I find interesting is that even though he seems to be the only one to make the connection between the eyes and God, he does just about the worst thing in the novel. He even said that you couldn't fool God.

I feel like Wilson's belief that the sign represented God came too late: he had already lost his wife, who was the only thing that mattered to him. Perhaps if he had felt a connection with God sooner, he could have changed his marriage and his life.

Wilson finally makes evident that God does seem to be watching over the horrid activities and actions of immorality taking place. Although standing silent still there. If the sign had not been placed would it have affected the actions of the characters in the book?
