Chapter 5 Symbols

In chapter 5 the main symbol in the chapter seems to be the clock at Nick's house.  Gatsby walks into the clock and almost knocks it over, but catches it before it breaks.  Gatsby is nervous because Daisy is there and does not know what to do.  Finally Nick walks out and Gatsby and Daisy talk and laugh just like old times.  I believe that the clock symbolizes lost time or time that was lost between the two.  Gatsby wants to stop time just like the clock has stopped.

I agree that the clock could symbolize lost time. Now that Gatsby finally has Daisy in his grasp, he would do anything to make up for the time that they have missed together. I think that further proves that Daisy would be the final key in Gatsby's achieving the American Dream.

while reading, I never would have picked up on the clock's symbolism, I like what you think it represents.

wow thatis a very smart inference on the meaning of the clock, maybe he's trying to take care of the time he has now as he catches time

I really love that the clock served as such a simple and literal form of symbolism but that it's so difficult to pick up on. I never would have thought Gatsby knocking over the clock would have such in depth meaning.

That is a great analogy between lost time and the clock. This could also show something about his love for her.
